The Embassy of the United States in Vilnius is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Lithuania.
History
The United States first established diplomatic relations with Lithuania on July 28, 1922. The U.S. representative to Lithuania was initially stationed at the Legation in Riga, Latvia, until the U.S. Legation in Kovno (now Kaunas) was set up on May 31, 1930. Following the Soviet occupation of Lithuania in 1940, the legation was forced to close.[1][2]
Normal diplomatic relations were resumed on September 6, 1991, after Lithuania regained its independence. The American Embassy in Vilnius was established shortly after on October 2, 1991, with Darryl N. Johnson serving as the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim.[1]
Since the re-establishment of relations, the United States and Lithuania have bolstered their partnership, with the U.S. supporting Lithuania's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) in 2004.[3][2]
