The Embassy of the United States in Bogotá is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Colombia.
History
Diplomatic relations between the United States and Colombia were established in 1822, soon after Colombia gained its independence from Spain. Relations have been maintained continuously ever since, even with the changes in Colombia's territorial and political structure.[1][2][3]
The title of first U.S. Minister to Colombia was held by Richard C. Anderson Jr. of Kentucky, appointed on January 27, 1823. Anderson officially began duties on December 16 of the same year, establishing the initial U.S. Mission in Colombia. Spruille Braden later became the first U.S. Ambassador to Colombia when the U.S. Legation was raised to the rank of Embassy in 1939.[2]
The first commercial treaty between the U.S. and the Republic of Colombia was signed in 1824 and remained effective until 1836. An enduring treaty of friendship and commerce, concluded in 1846 with the Republic of New Granada was proclaimed in 1848 and remains in force.[2]
