The Embassy of the United States, Kampala is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in the Republic of Uganda. The embassy is located in Uganda's capital, Kampala.

History

The United States established diplomatic relations with Uganda in 1962 following Uganda's independence from Britain. At the same time, the U.S. consulate in Kampala was elevated to embassy status, and Olcott Deming became the chargé d'affaires ad interim and later received the title of ambassador.[1][2]

Human rights abuses by Ugandan governments have strained relations between the U.S. and Uganda, particularly since the start of the rule of Idi Amin.[3] The U.S. Embassy in Kampala was closed on November 10, 1973, when all American diplomatic staff were evacuated from Uganda. The State Department cited internal security issues, operational difficulties for American programs and staff, and repeated public threats against embassy personnel and other Americans by high-ranking Ugandan officials as reasons for suspending the mission. Nevertheless, diplomatic relations between the two countries were not severed; Uganda maintained its embassy in Washington, D.C., and American interests in Uganda were represented by Germany.[1]

Following the ousting of Amin, the U.S. Embassy in Kampala was reopened on June 18, 1979, with David Holsted as the chargé d'affaires ad interim of the United States.[1] After President Yoweri Museveni came to power in 1986, Uganda experienced relative political stability and economic growth.[3]

The U.S. Embassy in Kampala includes: a consular section, a mission from the United States Agency for International Development, an office of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an office of the National Institutes of Health, an office of the United States Department of Defense, and a peacekeeping section.[4]
