The Embassy of the United States in Muscat is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Oman.

History

The initial act of diplomatic recognition between the United States and Oman occurred with the signing of a bilateral treaty of Amity and Commerce on September 21, 1833, in Muscat. It was orchestrated by Special Agent Edmund Roberts and His Majesty Seyed Syeed bin Sultan of Muscat.[1]

The United States established a consulate in Muscat in 1880, but it was closed in 1915.[1] Diplomatic relations between the United States and Oman were formally established on April 17, 1972. William Stoltzfus, the first U.S. Ambassador to Oman, presented his credentials while also being accredited to other nations in the region and being resident in Kuwait.[1] The U.S. Embassy in Muscat opened on July 4, 1972, beginning with Chargé d'Affaires ad interim Clifford J. Quinlan. William D. Wolle followed as the first resident Ambassador, presenting his credentials on July 17, 1974.[1]

Oman is situated on the Gulf of Oman, with 30 percent of the world's exported oil shipments passing through it. The U.S.-Oman partnership is underpinned by strategic initiatives like countering piracy, narcotics smuggling, border control, and enhancing military interoperability.[2] A military cooperation agreement between Oman and the United States was first signed in 1980 and subsequently revised and renewed in 2010.[2]

Tensions between the United States and Oman rose when Chinese and Omani officials discussed the possibility of putting a Chinese military base in Oman in October 2023.[3]
