The Embassy of the United States in Bridgetown is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Barbados.

History

The United States has maintained a consular presence in Barbados since June 11, 1823, during the time when Barbados was still under British colonial rule.[1][2]

After a constitutional conference with Great Britain in June 1966, Barbados formally achieved its independence on November 30, 1966. The United States immediately recognized Barbados' sovereignty, inaugurating the Embassy of the United States in Bridgetown on the same day. George Dolgin took up the post as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim, becoming the first head of the mission in newly independent Barbados.[1]

The first embassy for the United States to Barbados was located at the former Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Building on Broad Street. Later, this was transformed from a consulate to an embassy in 1966. After outgrowing the available space on Broad Street, the embassy began searching for a new home. In 1997, the diplomatic mission sought a purpose-built location in Wildey and in 2003, construction of the new U.S. Embassy designed by Sorg Architects began.[3] On January 11, 2007, the embassy moved from three old locations into the one new facility.[4] The current mission houses eight US government agencies, working in 24 countries and territories across the region.[5]
