The embassy of the United States in Ashgabat is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Turkmenistan. The country has a critical relationship with the U.S. as the world's fourth largest natural gas reserves as of 2023 and borders shared with Afghanistan and Iran.[1][2]
History
Diplomatic relations between the United States and Turkmenistan were established on February 19, 1992, following Turkmenistan's independence from the Soviet Union. Earlier, the United States had recognized Turkmenistan's independence on December 25, 1991, when then-President George H.W. Bush announced the decision as part of an address regarding the Soviet Union's dissolution. The American Embassy in Ashgabat was established on March 17, 1992.[3]
The U.S. broke ground on a new embassy site in Ashgabat in 2015, scheduled for completion in 2018.[4]
