Over the course of October and November 2023, Israeli forces mounted multiple ground incursions into Jenin in the West Bank, accompanied by aistrikes.

Background

The attacks came against a backdrop of rising violence across the West Bank following the advent of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war.[4] The Jenin refugee camp is a prominent centre of Palestinian militant activity, and the Jenin Brigades has been a long-term focus of Israeli military operations.[4]

Attacks

On 12 October 2023, Israel raided Jenin in the West Bank, detaining a single Hamas fighter and injuring others.[1][5] On 14 October 2023, Israel launched an invasion of the city, killing multiple people.[6][7][8]

On 22 October 2023, an airstrike conducted by Israel Defense Forces struck the Al-Ansar Mosque located in Jenin in the West Bank, causing extensive damage to the mosque, killing two people and injuring three more.[4][9][10]

The IDF claimed that Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad had been operating from a compound underneath the mosque.[9][10][4] The IDF did not confirm the means by which the strike had been performed, but Israeli media reported that it was a fighter jet. If confirmed, it would be only the second time a fighter jet struck a target in the West Bank in two decades.[10][11]

The Palestinian foreign ministry called the attack a "dangerous escalation in the use of warplanes", and noted its concern over the transfer of tactics deployed in the Gaza Strip to the West Bank.[12]

Israeli forces also stepped up their attacks in other parts of the West Bank the same night, with other operations killing five other Palestinians the same night in Qabatiya, Tammun, and Nablus, bringing the total number of those killed in the West Bank since 7 October up to 90 people, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.[9]

Ayser Mohammad Al-Amer, a senior commander of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad was killed during a clash with IDF in the Jenin refugee camp according to a report published on 27 October.[13]

On October 30, Israeli forces once again raided Jenin and engaged in fighting, with two Palestinians reported to have been killed.[14]

On November 17 the IDF clashed with Al-Quds Brigades and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades militants in Jenin over several hours.[2] Five persons including three Hamas fighters and two Palestinians were killed.[15][16]

On November 29 the IDF further clashed with PIJ militants in Jenin. Two PIJ militants killed in clashes.[17] Additionally, 14-year old Basel Abu Al-Wafa and 8-year old Adam Al-Ghool were shot dead by Israeli forces. CCTV footage depicting the killings show Basel Abu Al-Wafa being shot at multiple times, sustaining mortal wounds while 8-year old Adam Al-Ghool was killed with a shot to the head.[18] [19]
