In the surprise attack on Israel that occurred on 7 October 2023, Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip invaded the Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel. They murdered scores of its residents, burned homes, and abducted civilians.[2] Per The New York Times, 180 of the roughly 400 residents were killed or abducted as hostages.[3] The Jerusalem Post also estimated 80 abductions in Nir Oz.[4] An account by a veteran war correspondent reported that "around a quarter of the people of Nir Oz were assassinated, kidnapped, or injured in a very severe way. Those who survived have no place to come back to."[5] Palestinian civilians from Gaza also arrived in Nir Oz to loot residents' homes. The kibbutz's security team battled the militants, and most of its members were killed. After almost 11 hours, IDF troops arrived and cleared the kibbutz.[6]

The surviving kibbutz members were evacuated to Eilat.[7]

Hamas militants murdered the Kedem family in their secure room at Nir Oz, including Tamar Kedem Siman Tov, her husband Yonatan (Johnny), her mother-in-law, two 6-year-old daughters, Shahar and Arbel, and son Omer, aged 4.[8] The murder of one elderly woman was filmed and posted on her Facebook wall by her killers.[9]

Polish-Israeli historian Alex Dancyg was among the abductees from Nir Oz.[10][11]

Among the Hamas hostages, there were a 12-year-old girl with autism named Noya Dan and her 80-year-old grandmother Carmela Dan.[12] On Twitter, author JK Rowling published a photo of Noya, reportedly a fan of Harry Potter, and wrote: "Kidnapping children is despicable and wholly unjustifiable. For obvious reasons, this picture has hit home with me. May Noya and all hostages taken by Hamas be returned soon, safely, to their families".[12] On 19 October, the bodies of both Noya and Carmela Dan were discovered by the IDF in Gaza, near the Israeli border; the IDF claims the abductors were slowed down by the Dans, and killed them to eliminate the hindrance.[13][14][15]
