Afro house (also spelled as Afro-house or Afrohouse)[1] is a sub-genre of house music mainly developed in South Africa.[2] The genre's prominence became preeminent in the 2000s and has developed over the years.[3] Notable artists of the genre are Black Coffee,[4] DJ Tira,[5]Osunlade,[6] Da Capo,[7] Louie Vega[8] and Keinemusik Crue.[9][8]
Characteristics
The sub-genre is principally a blend of traditional house, kwaito, deep house, tribal house, and soulful house.[2] It features various South African languages.[4][10] The BPM commonly shifts between 80 and 122 and in some instances, up to even 160.[2][10][11]
History
The exact year, as well as the location, of Afro house is debatable and disputed by various narratives. It is thought to have already began in the early 1990s due to the heavy presence of house and kwaito, locally.[12] In the 2000s, the sub-genre developed further and become widespread in various parts of South Africa, such as Durban, Soweto, Pretoria, and Cape Town. It has subsequently become popularized in other parts of the world including the United States, South America, Europe, and Asia.[4][13]
Ostensibly before it was 'officially' named and categorized as a sub-genre, it was just referred to as simply house.[14] There is also evidence of the genre having being popularized in Angola due to the local dance culture. This is partially attributed to the musical genre kuduro.[15][16]
In 2017, Beatport updated its platform with an additional Afro house category.[17] In 2019, six South African Afro house DJs were nominated at the DJ Awards.[18] Da Capo won the Afro House award.[19]
Over the past decade the sub-genre's maturation has accelerated. It has also been blended with other genres as well as sub-genres.[1][20][21] In the early 2020s there has been a surge in the number of Afro house releases and popularity.[22][23][24]
