Afro tech, also spelled Afro-tech or AfroTech,[1][2] is a sub-genre of house music which originates and is predominantly made in South Africa,[1][2][3] where it emerged in the late 2000s.[4] Afro tech is the union of Afro house,[4] techno,[5] and deep house.[6] It often includes a combination of modern electronic and techno sounds, lead by South African percussion and other various African instruments.[5][7] South African DJs and music producers who pioneered and popularized the genre globally include Black Coffee, Culoe De Song, Euphonik, Zakes Bantwini,[8] Shimza,[9] and Da Capo.[10][7]

Although the sub-genre has been perceptibly present for well more than a decade in 2015, Black Coffee received the Breakthrough of the Year award at the DJ Awards,[11] primarily due to his Afro tech song "We Dance Again" featuring Nakhane. His win highlighted the genre, increasing its popularity.[2][3][12] DJ Lag appears to be the first artist to have coined the "3 Step" phrase as per his 2018 song "3 Step Culo". Some of his work additionally showcases the sub-genre's fusion properties.[13][14][15]

In 2023, Spotify established the "AfroTech Now" playlist.[16] "iPlan" by Dlala Thukzin debuted at number 1 on Billboard South Africa songs,[17] and on The Official South African Charts,[18] also surpassed 2 millions streams,[19] and achieved double-platinum status in 2 weeks.[20][21]
