The 2023 Independence Bowl is a college football bowl game that is scheduled to be played on December 16, 2023, at Independence Stadium located in Shreveport, Louisiana. The 47th annual Independence Bowl game will feature a team from the Big 12 Conference and a team from the Pac-12 Conference. The game is scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m. CST and will air on ESPN.[1][2] The Independence Bowl will be one of the 2023–24 bowl games that will be concluding the 2023 FBS football season. The bowl game will be sponsored by engineering services company Radiance Technologies, and the game will be officially known as the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl.

Teams

Based on conference tie-ins, the game will feature the California Golden Bears of the Pac-12 Conference and the Texas Tech Red Raiders of the Big 12 Conference.

This will be the second meeting between California and Texas Tech. The Red Raiders won their only previous meeting, defeating the Golden Bears 45–31 on December 30, 2004 in the 2004 Holiday Bowl.[3]

California

This will be California's first Independence Bowl. It will also be the Golden Bears' final game as a member of the Pac-12, as they are set to join the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2024.[4]

Texas Tech

This will be Texas Tech's third Independence Bowl. The Red Raiders are 0–2 in their previous appearances; previously losing the 1986 installment to the Ole Miss Rebels by a score of 20–17, and then losing the 1998 installment to these same Rebels by a score of 35–18.
