The 2023 Duke's Mayo Bowl is a college football bowl game that is scheduled to be played on December 27, 2023, at Bank of America Stadium located in Charlotte, North Carolina. The 22nd annual Duke's Mayo Bowl, game will feature teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. EST and will air on ESPN.[1][2] The Duke's Mayo Bowl game will be one of the 2023–24 bowl games concluding the 2023 FBS football season. The game's title sponsor is Duke's Mayonnaise.
Teams
The 2023 edition of the Duke's Mayo Bowl will be the fourth under the Duke's Mayonnaise branding and 22nd overall. Based on conference tie-ins, the game was to feature teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference, however, West Virginia's selection means that it will be a matchup of teams from the ACC and the Big 12. It will be the third ever meeting between the Mountaineers and the Tar Heels, as the teams have a 1-1 record against each other.[3] Both previous matchups have also taken place in bowl games, The two teams most recently met in the 2008 edition of this game, when it was known as the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
North Carolina will be making its 38th bowl game appearance and 6th Duke's Mayo Bowl appearance, previously playing in the 2004, 2008, 2009, 2013, and 2021 editions.[4] West Virginia will make their 40th bowl appearance and 3rd Duke's Mayo Bowl appearance, previously playing in the 2002 and 2008 editions.[5]
North Carolina
After starting the regular season 6-0 and rising as high as 10th in the AP Poll, North Carolina went 2–4 in the final six regular season games, finishing the season unranked and with an 8-4 record (4-4 in ACC play). The Tar Heels played two ranked opponents, going 1-1 with a victory over then-No. 25 Miami and a loss against then-No. 22 NC State in the final regular season game. Sophomore running back Omarion Hampton ran for 1,442 yards and 15 touchdowns in the regular season, becoming a finalist for the Doak Walker Award.
West Virginia
The 2023 Mountaineers also went 8-4 in the regular season. They went 6-3 in Big 12 play, finishing sixth in the conference standings. They played two ranked opponents, losing both games. They lost the season opener to No. 7 Penn State, and also lost to No. 17 Oklahoma in conference play.
