From Proto-Balto-Slavic *térˀtei / *tírˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (“to rub”). Cognates with Lithuanian tìrti (“to investigate”), trìnti (“to rub”) and Latvian trĩt (“to sharpen”).
