"Jackie Brown" (stylized in all caps) is a song by American R&B singer Brent Faiyaz and the sixteenth track from his second studio album, Wasteland (2022). It was produced by Faiyaz along with L3gion and Jordan Ware.
Critical reception
AllMusic's Andy Kellman wrote that the track is "creative" and "a candied and elegantly smudged ballad in which Faiyaz duets with a feminized version of himself".[1] Writing for HipHopDX, David Aaron Brake noted that the track has a "sharp clarity".[2] The New York Times' Jon Caramanica stated that the track has "new wave shimmers".[3]
Music video
The Lone Wolf and Mark Peaced-directed music video was released over a year after the song's release on August 16, 2023.[4] The music video is inspired by the 1997 Quentin Tarantino-directed, Jackie Brown.[4] In an October 2022 interview with Variety, Faiyaz spoke about the song's inspiration and how it efected the visuals:[5]
"Jackie Brown was one of the movies I was watching during COVID on repeat. Besides the fact that Pam Grier was fine as sh-t in that movie, I also liked the fact that they stay by the beach in L.A., and I stay in Venice. Cinematically, I liked the shots and I liked the colors. For whatever reason, when I watch Tarantino films, it just makes me want to make music. Something about the images just puts sounds in my head. Tarantino’s the GOAT. Cold as f–k."
