The 2023 season is the Minnesota Vikings' 63rd in the National Football League, their eighth playing their home games at U.S. Bank Stadium and their second under the head coach/general manager tandem of Kevin O'Connell and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. After starting 0–3 for the second time in the past four seasons, they recorded their fourth loss to the Chiefs in Week 5, meaning they would fail to improve upon their 13–4 record from 2022. A fifth loss followed to the Denver Broncos in Week 11, confirming they would not be able to match the previous season's record; During week 8 victory at the Packers starting quarterback Kirk Cousins ruptured his achilles tendon[1] however, they are still in contention to defend the NFC North title for the first time since 2009.

For the first time since 2012, wide receiver Adam Thielen is not on the roster, as he was released on March 10.[2] Additionally, for the first time since 2016, four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook is not on the roster, as he was released on June 9.[3] This is also the first season since the death of legendary coach and team advisor Bud Grant on March 11.[4]

The team wore Bud Grant patches on their throwback jerseys for game 1 of the season vs the Buccaneers and continued to wear a bud grant sticker on the back of the helmet for the remainder of the season[5]
