Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Uncertain:
- From Proto-Indo-European *wed-ro-, from *wed- (“water”). Morphologically *ved- + *-rъ. Cognate with Latin vitrum n (“glass”).
- From Proto-Indo-European *wedʰro- or *h₂wh₁edʰro- (< *h₂weh₁- (“to blow”)). Possibly cognate with Proto-Germanic *wedrą n (“weather”) (or from *h₂wh₁etro- or *wétrom). Compare *vě̀trъ (“wind, air”).
