Software for high-quality creating storyboard frames

Selecting your 3D software: You can chose from many different programs for doing 3D storyboards for the Macintosh or Windows.

Unfortunately, there are still no easy-to-use 3D programs for Linux.

FrameForge 3D Studio

Probably, the best news of the decade is that you can download and use a demo version of FrameForge 3D Studio. Once you know how to use this program, you will find it extremely valuable.

Being only a demo version, it has some limitations. However, for our projects, the limitation are not important. You can save your projects (remembering to save the project as a cross platform document) and send me your entire project file.

FrameForge 3D Studio is it is designs specifically for this purpose. And the programs is designed for filmmakers. But it does take some getting used to.

Free 3D poser software

DAZ Studio

Another program that you can use for creating 3D storyboards is DAZ Studio.

DAZ Studio is a free program which is useful but it is just a rough draft.

Once you learn how to use all the featurs of FrameForge 3D Studio, it is much easier and much more accurate than DAZ Studio. But with DAZ Studio, you have more models to select from (not free). You can also control the lights better with DAZ Studio.

The models for DAZ Studio (and Poser) are not free. Fortunately the figures are very inexpensive. An entire cottage industry is hard at work creating new and exciting models. Examples are shown right.

Poser

Poser is the original 3D posing program which is very useful but expensive.

Poser uses the same digital puppets as DAZ Studio. (Actually, more digital figures are compatible with Poser than DAZ Studio.)

3D animation software

Maya Learning Personal Edition

There are learning additions for many of the animation programs. Just download it and begin.

Unfortuately, the download for this free program is (I believe) about 125 Megs. I cannot download anything that large so I have not tested this.

Occasionally, disks of the free Maya Learning Personal Edition are available at trade shows. If you are lucky enough to find any of these on a disk, you can learn the animation software while doing this storyboards.
