It is an alliance between LASALLE College of the Arts (LASALLE) and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). It was announced as a planned-university in 2021, and took its present name in 2022.

Applications are open from October 2023 for UAS’ inaugural intake, which commences in August 2024. Admission to UAS is based on the criteria set by the respective constituent colleges; each institution manages its own applications and admissions processes. The two institutions will also continue to offer their own programmes on their existing campuses.

A new central entity, University of the Arts Singapore (UAS) Ltd, will operate out of the National Design Centre in Middle Road, which is in close proximity to the two other institutions. UAS Ltd will lead and provide strategic direction to the university, acting as the coordinating body to drive synergies across UAS.

UAS will be the seventh local university of Singapore, and have its own degree-conferring power in Singapore.[5]

Programmes

UAS will offer an expanded range of programme offerings in fine arts, design, media arts, performing arts and arts management, as well as in new and upcoming areas in the applied arts. UAS will validate, confer and award the degree programmes offered by LASALLE and NAFA. UAS has also introduced eight new degree programmes and a common curriculum in September 2023. Five bachelor’s and three master’s degree programmes are set to drive new areas in the creative economy. A common curriculum will foster career readiness and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration.

UAS will also provide the opportunity for larger scale collaborations, such as with world-class arts practitioners and researchers. Other collaborations, such as exchange programmes and joint projects will continue. UAS is supported by the Ministry of Education of Singapore with funding for eligible subsidised bachelor’s students. UAS will generate new artistic thinking and discourse by creatively combining teaching, practice, and research. Collaborating with arts communities and industry partners locally and internationally.[6]
