Umrao Singh Sher-Gil Majithia (1870–1954) was an Indian aristocrat, scholar of Sanskrit and philosophy, and photographer. He is known for the around 80 self portrait photographs he took during his lifetime. His elder daughter was the artist Amrita Sher-Gil. In India, a photography grant is named for him.[1][2]

Early life

Umrao Singh Sher-Gil Majithia was born in 1870 to Surat Singh of Majitha, near Amritsar.[1] His younger brother was Sundar Singh.[1]
