The Changchun Tram is a historic tram line in Changchun, Jilin, China. It was first opened November 11, 1941, and was constructed by the Manchukuo government. On August 15, 1945, the tram had 7 lines and 73 trains. At its peak in 1960, the tram had 6 lines and 88 trains covering almost 53 km.

Since the 2000s there was only one lineLine No. 54it is 7.6 km long going from Xi'an Road to Gongnong Road (Hongqi Street). In 2014, a new line named No. 55 opened. It runs from Hongqi Street to just outside Changchun West Railway Station.

History

The Changchun tram was built in 1937 (according to other sources in 1941) by the Japanese, at a time when this city was the capital of the Japanese dependent state of Manchukuo. The maximum length of the system was 44 km, but by the end of the eighties it was reduced by half. On June 5, 1986, routes No. 51 and 56 were closed, leaving only one tram route (No. 53) in the center of Changchun. The remaining two routes (No. 52 and 54), preserved by the end of the eighties, served the industrial area.

Description of the system

As of the late eighties, the Changchun tram system consisted of three lines (routes) Route 53 connected the tram depot with the main railway station of the city. Route 52 went from the tram depot to the industrial zone (terminus in the Wuzhan district) Route 54 went from the tram depot to the industrial zone (terminus in the Heipingdao area) Routes 52 and 54 were primarily on a dedicated highway.

Rolling stock

Initially, the line used Japanese-style two-axle trams, as well as two-axle trailed cars. Changchun also used a small number of four-axle trams, which had previously been used on the Shenyang-Fushun intercity tram line. In the fifties, Changchun received ten four-axle trams of the "Dalian" type (No. 401–410), as well as a large number of used pre-war two-axle trams from Shenyang, Dalian and Beijing. In Changchun these trams were designated as series 200, 300, 500, and presumably 411-420. Changchun later received ten new four-axle trams (No. 701-710). Over the entire period of the existence of the tram system in Changchun, only one tram was built on its own (in 1959). It does not have a tail number.
