Sir Timothy Lewis Achilles Daunt KCMG (11 October 1935 – 5 August 2023) was a British diplomat and Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man.

Early life

Daunt was educated at Sherborne School and St Catharine's College, Cambridge.[2]

Career

Daunt was commissioned into the Royal Armoured Corps in 1955[3] and posted to the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars. After completing national service, he joined the diplomatic service and, after a series of postings, became Permanent Representative to NATO in Brussels in 1982[4] and then British Ambassador to Turkey from 1986 to his retirement in 1992.[5]

In retirement he became Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man.[6] He later became chairman of the Ottoman Fund, a business established to provide mortgages for properties in Turkey.[7]

Personal life and death

In 1962 he married Patricia Susan Knight (1938-2023), second daughter of Major Claude Thorburn Knight (1910-1993) by his wife Priscilla (1914-1995), only daughter of John William Dodson, 2nd Baron Monk Bretton.[8][9] Lady Daunt grew up mostly on a farm in East Sussex, just north of Lewes, and was educated at Langford Grove School, Barcombe and Southover Manor School, Lewes.[10] Both Daunts were involved with The Friends of Aphrodisias Trust. Lady Daunt's inclinations towards Asia Minor seem to have been further boosted by her having been a five-times great-niece of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, not that she knew of the connection. Similarly, through her organisational and social flare and general energy Lady Daunt showed signs of being a throw back to her ancestor Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.[11] In October 2017 a selection of Lady Daunt's 25 years' worth of essays written for Cornucopia Magazine was published as The Palace Lady's Summerhouse and other inside stories from a vanishing Turkey.[12]

Daunt died of the effects of cerebral vasculitis on 5 August 2023, at the age of 87.[13][14] Lady Daunt died on 2 October 2023, at the age of 84.[15]
