Tihar Village is one of the oldest villages in Delhi. Tihar is a village in west Delhi which lends the capital’s prison complex its name. Tihar village was established by Muslim Tyagi who converted to Islam in the 17th century. Tihar Village used to be populated by Muslim Tyagis — Brahmins who adopted Muslim names to forego the jizya tax during Aurangzeb’s reign.
In modern era it is populated by Gujjars, Jats, Baniyas, Punjabis, Sindhis, Rajputs and Pahari communities.
Tourist attractions in the area are Jheel Wala Park, Tandoor Chowk Market, Community Centre, Local Mosques and Temples in Tihar Village, Manak Vihar and Ashok Nagar. There is a cremation ground in Beri Wala Bagh in Tihar Village. In the early 1980s this village was divided in three parts, Tihar Village, Ashok Nagar and Subhash Nagar. Ashok Nagar was further divided in Ashok Nagar and Prem Nagar.
