The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIERs) is a Nigeria-based registered non-for-profit organisation working to create a society where human rights are guaranteed and protected regardless of status, gender identity, sexual orientation and affiliation.[1]

TIERs works towards empowering LGBTQ+ individuals by providing support, resources, and creating safe spaces for community engagement,they conduct educational programs to enhance understanding and acceptance within society.[2]

TIERs engages in capacity-building activities, including workshops, seminars, and training sessions, to equip individuals and organizations with the knowledge and skills needed for LGBTQ+ advocacy.[3]

The organization conducts research on issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community, producing reports and documentation to support evidence-based advocacy through research findings to inform its programs and influence policy change.[4]

History

The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIERs) was founded in 2005 as a response to the discrimination and marginalisation of sexual minorities in both HIV prevention programming, human rights protection, advocacy, and mainstream human rights work.[5]

Programs

TIERs in partnership Asurf Films Limited, released a movie titled for Hell or High Water,[6] a short film about a young pastor in Nigeria who has to confront a hidden truth about himself.The film tells the story of a pastor who is loved and adored by the people around him, but who has to make a difficult decision between being who he is and meeting societal expectations around sexuality and family.[7]

TIERs has released 10 publications on issues concerning human rights, sexuality and gender orientation,violence, social rights and cultural relativism[8]
