The Hows of Us is a 2018 Filipino romantic comedy-drama film directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina and starring Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla.[1][2][3] They were recognized as Phenomenal Box Office Stars and were given the Golden Jury Award and honors at the 50th Guillermo Box Office Entertainment Awards and received the Camera Obscura Award for their success worldwide.

It marked Garcia-Molina's second collaboration with Bernardo and Padilla after the 2014 hit film She's Dating the Gangster. The Hows of Us broke multiple records in the Philippines, including being one of the first locally produced movies to reach ₱600 million in domestic box-office earnings, which it achieved in 20 days.[4] The film grossed ₱805 million under 50 days after its Philippine release.[4] After its original run, it was shown in three countries in Southeast Asia and grossed US$50,000.00.

Bernardo won the Best Actress award at the 35th PMPC Star Awards for Movies[5] and Entertainment Editors' Choice Awards for Movies.

Plot

Primo and George had been high school sweethearts since the tenth grade, when Primo was transferred to George's school exploring different life paths. Even though they lived far apart most of the time, their devotion to each other never wavered. With love and understanding, they were each other's anchor and knew that their whole lives would be spent together despite any obstacles. Once they reunited in their mid-twenties, Primo and George wasted no time in celebrating their newfound freedom by exploring the world. They visited new countries, experienced different cultures, and witnessed breathtaking sceneries that will stay with them throughout their lifetime. The couple has faced many trials and tribulations together, but has always found their way back to each other, reaffirming their vows to stay together no matter what life brings their way.

They worry about getting enough sleep and spending enough time with family. Even when they put in extra effort in the name of progress, they always seem one step behind where they want to be. Yet, in spite of it all, they keep pursuing their dreams. While some wish for things to be easier, these brave souls continue pushing towards success. Nobody knows how close they are to reaching their goal, because they don't give up without a fight, it all pays off. Unfortunately, life isn't always kind to people who dream of a happily-ever-after. They encounter personal issues, such as loneliness or stress, and financial challenges, such as bills and increasing costs of living. Trying to juggle their career and relationship goals becomes more difficult with each new hurdle. As if that isn't enough, they must also face the daily struggles of getting enough sleep, spending enough quality time with family and friends, and trying to stay healthy. All of these things put them even further behind where they want to be in life, so it takes a lot of courage and dedication to keep up the hard work. They choose to keep pushing towards their dreams instead of allowing themselves to be defeated. Even when life gets tough and all they want is to give up, they find hope and motivation in the thought that eventually their hard work will pay off. No one can ever know just how close they are to achieving their goals, but they never give up without a fight, they are usually rewarded for their tenacity and resilience.

The couple faces hardships and uncertainties in their life, but they are determined to keep the faith and not give up. When they have their doubts, they remember how far they've come and turn to their close friends and family who support them unconditionally. With their love and encouragement, the couple stays strong and come out wiser and more prepared for the next challenge they face. They understand how to value life's little moments and appreciate how they have each other. Through the moments of joy and sorrow, they work to build a future together, one where they are side-by-side, no matter what comes their way. Ultimately, the couple strives for the ultimate goal of growing old together, a future that will be filled with laughter and love.

After so many years of struggle and trials, Primo and George can finally rejoice and look forward to a safe, happy and secure future together. The couple has grown to become a symbol of resilience for many around the world's LGBTQ community. They have survived the ups and downs, the heartache, the disappointment and the hurdle of stigma and discrimination. Despite the odds, their tenacity, resilience and love for each other has allowed them to reach their goal and together take the same adventurous journey that most other couples take - living a life that is filled with mutual trust and understanding, a bond that brings a smile to their face everyday.

The couple has witnessed their success to be a result of a wider community that has rallied around them, giving them strength in the face of adversity. Their families, friends, wider LGBTQ community and people from all walks of life have provided a support network of acceptance and understanding. Ultimately, Primo and George have set an example to anyone fighting for something they believe in. Through living their experience, they have demonstrated that the strength of their connection is powerful enough to overcome any and all obstacles.

At the end, the couple finally succeeds in overcoming their trials and tribulations. Release

The Hows of Us premiered on cinemas in the Philippines on August 29, 2018. On September 6, 2018, eight days after the domestic release of The Hows of Us, the film started its international screenings in Brunei, Papua New Guinea, and the United Arab Emirates. On the following day, the film premiered in Canada, Malaysia, and the United States. The film also began screening in Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands. On September 8 and 9, screenings started in Thailand, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain,

The Hows of Us, started showing in regular cinemas in Vietnam on October 26, 2018.[6] It also had a regular screening in Indonesia in November 2018.[7]

Box office

Domestic

The Hows of Us earned ₱35.9 million on its first day. Five days after, it earned ₱279.5 million, making it the biggest opening weekend of a Filipino film of all time. The film also broke many records in a span of 5 days, such as highest single-day gross for a local film; a staggering ₱82.4 million alone on September 2, 2018,[8] and the highest number of cinemas opened for any local film with 435 on September 2, 2018.[9][10]

As of September 3, 2018, the film gross total earned ₱318 million[11] As of September 7, 2018, the film has grossed ₱404.7 million in just 10 days, breaking the record of A Second Chance which grossed ₱400 million on its 11th day,[12] making it the fastest local non-MMFF film to breached the ₱400M mark.[13] As of September 9, 2018, the movie has grossed a total of ₱505.7 million domestically in just 12 days, making it the fastest local film to breach the ₱500 million mark.[14] After 20 days in still 200 cinemas nationwide, the film has grossed ₱601.2 domestically,[15] beating Gandarrapiddo: The Revenger Squad's ₱571 million[16] It is the first Philippine film to breach the ₱600 million mark domestically.[17][18]

On September 26, 2018, the film's box office gross has reached around ₱650 million.[19]

Foreign

It was announced by Star Cinema's executive Roxy Liquigan on their Victory Party (September 12) that the movie has grossed $1 million in 5 days (September 6–10) of overseas screening.

In North America, The Hows of Us earned $537,000 on its first 3 days.[20] After 10 days, the movie earned a whopping $1.2 million.[21] Movie City News reported that the movie has grossed $1.5M in 17 days of screening in North America.[22] In United Kingdom, the movie earned a record-breaking $30,890 in its first 3 days screening in 3 theaters only.[23] While in Australia, the movie posted a potent $64,340 gross on its first 3 days of screening.[24] Box Office Mojo in UAE reported that the movie earned a record-breaking $369,918 4-day opening gross.[25]

After 2 weeks of showing abroad, The Hows of Us breach the two-million-US-dollar mark ($2.043 million) announced by TFC on Twitter.[26] It is the second film starring Bernardo and Padilla to breach the two-million-US-dollar mark abroad, the first one being their 2015 hit Crazy Beautiful You.

On September 26, 2018, the figure rose to $2.3 million.[19]

The Hows of Us has already made $2.675 million (₱144 million), from overseas screenings.[4]
