Teddy Bear Hospital (TBH) is an international project, whose aim is to reduce "childhood anxiety about medical environments, procedures and medical professionals".[1] TBH initiatives are run at approximately 20 medical schools in the UK,[2][3] 8 medical schools in Australia, 2 medical schools in Ireland (including University of Galway and University of Limerick[4][5]) and one medical school in Israel. Within the United Kingdom, a number of the TBH programs are coodinated by Medsin.[2]
St George's University of London
Unlike other TBH projects in the UK, St George's University of London TBH is not operated under Medsin. Rather, it is run as a separate society by a committee of 6-8 people and has trained over 400 Teddy Bear Doctors, each of whom has been CRB checked and holds a NSPCC Child Protection Awareness Certificate.
Projects run by TBH at St George's, University of London (SGUL) have included talks promoting child health (including an "FGM Talk" undertaken in 2009), fundraising events, puppet shows and TBH clinics.
The TBH clinics are the main focus of the society and have been run for schools, Beaver Scout groups, Brownie groups and after-school clubs in South West London since March 2009. Within the clinics run at SGUL, children undertake tasks such as building a large jigsaw of the skeleton or learning how to use stethoscopes. Aspects of the stations, undertaken during these clinics, complement or cover parts of the KS1/KS2 curriculum, in particular PHSE. Children are asked to bring along a teddy tear to the clinic on which new skills are learnt and practised.
In addition to fundraising within the hospital and university, SGUL TBH organised a fun run in Hyde Park in May 2010.[6] SGUL Teddy Bear Hospital also ran a "community day" in 2018, held at St George's, University of London, where members of the public were invited to attend with their children.
