Sira Abed Rego (born 20 November 1973)[1] is a Spanish dietitian and politician affiliated with United Left (IU), who was a Member of the European Parliament between 2019 and 2023.[2] In that capacity she was nominated as European United Left–Nordic Green Left's candidate for President of the European Parliament,[3] placing fourth in the election held on 3 July 2019.[4][5][6]

She has been committed to the fight against violence against women in all areas and throughout the world.[7]

On 21 November 2023, she was appointed Minister of the Government of Spain, in charge of Youth and Children.

In the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, Rego posted a post in favour of Palestinian "right to resist".[8]

Controversies

In September 2023 Rego was one of the few MEPs to vote against the EU's position against the Russian army's forced deportation of more than 2,000 Ukrainian children from their country to Russification camps in Belarus.[9]

Personal life

Born in Valencia to a Spanish mother and a Palestinian father, Rego spent part of her early life in 'Anata.[10] Her father lives with Sira's brother in the West Bank.[11]
