Shailendra Pandya (born 27 March 1987) is an Indian child rights activist.[1] and former member of the Rajasthan State Commission for protection of Child Rights, Government of Rajasthan, India.[2][3]

Early life and education

Pandya was born in Udaipur, Rajasthan, and graduated in Computer Engineering from University of Rajasthan in 2009. His education continued at the Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University, Rajasthan . After completing his master's degree in social work in 2012, Pandya began his professional career for protection of child rights and then joined Rajasthan State Commission for Protection of Child Rights as state in charge of Child Labour Cell, where he was involve in policies and programs for eradication and rehabilitation of child labour[4] During his tenure many rehabilitation were set for rescued child from labor.[5]

Activism

In 2019, in a interstate rescue was led by him, saving 138 children (ages 10–16) from Surat, with Rajasthan Police, they were brought to work in various jobs.[6] Twelve people were arrested. Most of the rescued children (128) were from Rajasthan, with the remainder from Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.[7]

On 12 June 2022, a 'Child Labour Free Udaipur' campaign launched on Anti Child Labour Day.[8] where 91 children were rescued from various workplaces and the registration of 17 FIRs were registered, against 54 employers. and later sixty of the rescued children were re-enrolled in education.[9]

Pandya played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic when he conducted a Situational Analysis of Tribal Child Labour.[10] where 865 migrant children returning to their villages during pandemic to educational facilities, for rehabilitation and identified families of child laborers.[11]

To prevent child marriage, he worked with the district administration, creating a helpline to report cases and offering a Rs 2,100 reward for informants. which prevented 15 child marriages in one season.His efforts led to release of first injunction order in Udaipur district.[5][12] he was speaker at Tedx Pradhikaran at D Y Patil Vidyapeeth Pune, 2023.

Awards

  • Leadership Excellence Award for the rescue and rehabilitation of Child Labourers, in 2022.
  • Social Leaders award by Fox Story India, in 2022, in the field of Child Rehabilitation and Child Rights in India.[13]
  • Social Change Makers award by Doordarshan, in the field of child protection, In 2017.
  • Laadli Award in 2014 by Government of Rajasthan for child protection and girl child education work in tribal areas.[13]
