Relay is an accredited not-for-profit institution of higher education serving 4,000 teachers and 1,200 school leaders across the U.S. Relay offers degree programs, professional development, and unique learning experiences for teachers, principals, college students, and members of the public. It was established in 2011 after being spun off from Hunter College's Teacher U program. It is the first stand-alone graduate school of education to open in New York since Bank Street College of Education was founded in 1916.

On September 7, 2013, Relay GSE held the commencement ceremony for its first graduating class of students on Pier 60 at Chelsea Piers in New York City.

The school has since expanded nationwide, with additional campuses in Atlanta,Chicago, Connecticut, Dallas-Fort Worth,Delaware, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Memphis, Nashville,Newark, Philadelphia, Camden,San Antonio, and Washington, D.C.[3]
