![]() Havel river in Grunewald at Schildhorn The Grunewald is a forest on the western side of Berlin to the east of the River Havel. At 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres) it is the largest green area in Berlin. The forest occupies most of the Grunewald district, a small part of Westend; most of Nikolassee, the northern side of Zehlendorf and the northwestern part of Dahlem. It is close to Wannsee and its lake as well as the Düppel forest, and is separated by the Havel from the districts of Kladow, Gatow and Wilhelmstadt. It also borders on Schmargendorf. There are two islets in the Havel (Lindwerder and Schwanenwerder) and a small peninsula (Schildhorn); and the highest point is the Teufelsberg (117 m). On the northern border is the Berlin transmission tower and the Messe trade fair. As well as the Havel and part of the Großer Wannsee lake, the forest has many lakes and ponds. The biggest are the Schlachtensee, Krumme Lanke, Grunewaldsee and Hundekehlesee, all on the western side of the forest and are linked by a canal. Others include the Riemeisterfenn, the Teufelsee, Pechsee and Barssee. → more...
