Munawar Iqbal Faruqui (born 28 January 1992[1]) is an Indian stand-up comedian and rapper.[5] In 2022 he appeared as a contestant on Kangana Ranaut's reality TV show Lock Upp Season 1 and emerged as the winner of the show.[6] He is currently a contestant on the Indian reality TV show, Bigg Boss (Hindi season 17) which started in October 2023.[7]

Early life and family

Faruqui was born in Junagadh, Gujarat,[8][9] on 28 January 1992 to a Gujarati Muslim family.[10] Due to financial constraints, he left school after the 5th grade.[11] Later he completed his graduation.[12] His family relocated to Mumbai during his early years, and his mother died in 2007.

Since December 2021, he has been dating Social media influencer Nazila Sitaishi.[9][6] During his appearance on the reality TV show Bigg Boss (Hindi season 17), he admitted of marrying in 2017 but separated from his wife in 2020 and they have a five-year-old son.[13][14]

Career

In April 2020, he uploaded a standup comedy video named "Dawood, Yamraaj & Aurat" on his channel, which earned him his initial stardom.[15] He released his debut song "Jawab" in collaboration with an Indian musician Spectra in August 2020.

In 28 Feb 2021, he uploaded a standup comedy video named "Ghost Story" on his YouTube Channel.[16]

In 2022 he became a contestant on Kangana Ranaut's reality television show Lock Upp.[17][18] On 8 May 2022 he was declared the show's winner.[19]

On 5 Nov 2022, he did a Punjabi/panjabi song named 'Todh' along with Prince Narula and Rony Ajnali.

2021 arrest

Faruqui was on his tour where he was performing comedy in different cities of India. On 1 January 2021, he performed a stand-up show at Munro Cafe in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, which was interrupted by Eklavya Singh Gaur, son of BJP MLA Malini Gaur[20] accusing him of making malicious jokes about Hindu deities and the Minister of Home Affairs of India, Amit Shah.[21] On 2 January, he was arrested by Madhya Pradesh Police in the midst of his comic act, stating that he was arrested under the Hate speech laws in India.[22] The police however, had no evidence against Munawar, still arrested him.[23]

His arrest was heavily criticised for not respecting a comedian's freedom of speech, including by a joint initiative of the global Indian diaspora on 2 February 2021, that said a group of South Asian American stand-up comedians will perform a virtual comedy show on 6 February 2021 to show their solidarity with jailed Faruqui.[24] He was subsequently granted bail by the Supreme Court of India.[25]

Bigg Boss 17 Controversies

Entering the illustrious Bigg Boss 17,[2] Munawar Faruqui found himself at the center of controversy, with fans expressing concerns about body-shaming and age-shaming within the confines of the reality show.[26] The audience, eager for resolution, has been urging the show’s host, Salman Khan, to address these issues during the Weekend Ka Vaar episodes, shedding light on the challenges faced by contestants in the Bigg Boss house.[27]
