Misión Cumplida (English: Mission Accomplished) is the first posthumous studio album by regional Mexican singer Jenni Rivera, released by Sony Music Latin on June 30, 2023. It is Rivera's first studio album, posthumously, in eleven years since Joyas Prestadas.
The album is made up of Rivera's old recordings which were remastered upon release, with most of the album's production done by Sergio Lizárraga and Pavel Ocampo of Banda MS.
Background and release
On December 9, 2012, Jenni Rivera, along with five other passengers, died in the fatal plane crash en route to the city of Toluca.[1] In 2016, Rivera's youngest child, Johnny Rivera, had found the handwritten lyrics to "Misión Cumplida", the album's title track, which was originally written in 2008, and kept them as a memento. He also had a goal to find Jenni's old recordings that were stored in her hard drive. Among the songs in the hard drive, covers of songs by Chayito Valdez, Lucha Villa, and Ramón Ayala and an unfinished recording of "Pedacito de Mí" were found.[2] The song was originally recorded when Jenni was pregnant with Johnny, and Johnny recalled that he originally heard the song when her oldest sister, Chiquis Rivera, sang it in 2015, in an event for Jenni's birthday.[3] Chiquis Rivera, along with her sister Jacqie Rivera, who is the current CEO of Jenni Rivera Fashion, had recorded additional vocals for the unfinished recording.[4]
All of Rivera's five children, Chiquis, Jacqie, Michael, Jenicka, and Johnny, had been working on the album.[5] Johnny said, "What my mom loved was la banda sinaloense and Sergio is a master at that" and wanted to "make sure Jenni’s songs sound like [that] before she left [them]."[6] The album had been announced on Jenni's official Instagram account, though it is managed by her estate.[7] The album was released in June 30, 2023 on streaming platforms, digital download, and as a CD. The album was released on vinyl record on November 17, 2023.[8]
Singles
The album was supported by five singles, all being released posthumously. "Aparentemente Bien" was released on July 2, 2019, in honor of Jenni Rivera's fiftieth birthday, as the first single for Misión Cumplida. The song peaked at number 32 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart and number seven on Regional Mexican Airplay.[9][10] "Engañémoslo" was released on February 28, 2020, as the second single for the album.[11]
"Quisieran Tener Mi Lugar" was released on July 2, 2020, for Rivera's fifty-first birthday, as the third single for the album. It was also one of the songs found by Juan Rivera.[12][13] "Motivos" was released on March 19, 2021, along with an accompanying animation, as the fourth single.[14] "Misión Cumplida", the album's title track, was released on November 2, 2022 as the fifth and final single for the album, although some media outlets refer it as the first single on the album.[15]
