Michal Hašek (born 17 April 1976) is a Czech politician and former Governor of South Moravian Region. From 2002 until 2014, Hašek was a member of the Chamber of Deputies (MP). He also served as shadow Minister of Agriculture in the shadow cabinet of former Prime Minister Jiří Paroubek.

Early life and education

Hašek graduated from Faculty of Law of Masaryk University with a juris degree, but its validity has been called into question as it was obtained at an obscure law school in the southwestern Slovak town of Sládkovičovo.[1] His thesis was led by Mojmír Mamojka, a social democrat from Slovakia's Smer party, leading to allegations of clientelism.[2] Hasek passed the bar exam in June 2021.[3]

Political career

Member of Czech parliament

In the 2002 Czech parliamentary election, Hasek was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the Social Democracy of South Moravian Region.[4] He remained in the Chamber of Deputies until the beginning of March 2009.[5]

Governor

When Hašek gave up his parliamentary mandate on 27 February 2009, he justified his decision by stating it is not possible to work well as the long-term governor of South Moravia.[6] After Jiří Paroubek resigned as head of ČSSD, Hašek announced his candidacy as chairman.[7]

2016 Czech regional elections

At the regional conference of Social Democracy in November 2015, Hašek was nominated as the leader of the candidate for the 2016 Czech regional elections.[8] On the day of election, he received 8,103 preferential votes, but his party finished third behind the KDU-ČSL.[9] ČSSD later became part of the regional coalition, but himself resigned as governor on 16 November 2016.[10] Hašek also worked as an ordinary representative.[11]

In July 2018, Hašek became an external advisor to the Minister of Agriculture of the Czech Republic, Miroslav Toman, as a member of the Ministerial Legislative Council.[12]

Controversy

Before the 2016 Czech regional elections, Mlada Fronta Dnes reported that Hašek ordered marketing services worth 400,000 Czech Koruna from his partner, Jana Mrencová.[13] Her name was subsequently confirmed by former spokeswoman Denisa Kapitančiková, who stated that the lobbyist should repeatedly sign a contract with the office for 200,000 Czech Koruna.[14] Whilst searching for payments to Mrencová, journalists discovered that the South Moravian Region paid at least 650,000 Czech Koruna to JT Media for the publication of positive articles over three years.[15] Mlada Fronta Dnes later reported that Mrencová sent it back to the regional office.[16]
