Development
In November 2019, Graham King secured the rights to produce a film about Michael Jackson, with John Logan set to write the screenplay.[2] In February 2022, Lionsgate acquired the film's distribution rights.[1] In June 2022, casting began; Kimberly Hardin is the casting director. Production was expected to start in 2023.[3] In January 2023, Antoine Fuqua was announced as the director of the project.[4] That same month, Jaafar Jackson was set to portray Jackson.[5] In October 2023, Lionsgate and Universal Pictures announced that Universal would distribute the film internationally except Japan, while Lionsgate would serve as distributor domestically. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake said, "Michael’s decades-long career left an indelible mark on the way audiences experience entertainment all over the world. We are thrilled to be partnering with our friends at Universal to give global audiences new insight into the complex life of one of the most prolific artists the world has ever known."[6]
Filming
Principal photography was scheduled to begin in mid-2023. Robert Richardson serves as the cinematographer. The film is projected to spend $120 million on crew wages and vendors, according to the California Film Commission. The production will have a cast of 65 and 300 crew members, and is expected to film over 80 days in California, primarily in Santa Barbara.[7] Filming was delayed in September 2023 due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[8] Production kicked off after the strike was over.[6]
Principal photography began on November 27, 2023 in Los Angeles, California.[9]
