Mannadiyar (or Mannadiar) is a title and last name originating in South India.

Etymology

Mannadiar is an honorific title possessed by ancient landlords. The word is rooted from Mun or Maṇṇú (earth) and Nēṭiyavar or uṭayōr (lords, Jenmi or earners) clubbed to form Mannadiars.[1]

History

Mannadiyar is a title, which the Angarath and Vadaseri families of Kerala have. Mannadiyars are Hindus who follow a mixture of Shavaism and Vaishnavism. The palm leaf manuscripts in the possession of Mannadiyars, relate to several Malayalam works of poets from Kerala.

They are also said to be descendants of Pazhayakottai Pattakaraar Mandradiyars of Kongu Vellalar Gounder. They own the rights to open the western gate of Perur Pateeswarar Temple, Coimbatore as they once owned all lands west of the temple. They are also disiples of Perur Adeenam. [2]

Traditions and customs

There are some rituals and ceremonies which closely resemble that of Kongu Vellalar zamins of Kongu Nadu.[3]
