Kharkiv Regional State Administration is the local government administration of the Kharkiv region.

In light of the significant events during the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the administration's role and status came into focus.[1]

On March 1, 2022, the building of the administration suffered damage due to an airstrike attributed to the Russian Federation. The building sustained significant damage as a result of the attack.

History

Capture in 2014

On January 1, 2014, a gathering was held on Freedom Square in Kharkiv, initiated by Mayor Hennadii Kernes. The meeting was attended by Mayor Gennady Kernes and the head of the Kharkiv ODA, Mykhailo Dobkin. Tensions rose during the meeting, and clashes erupted between participants and activists of the Kharkiv Euromaidan. Following the clashes, Kernes' supporters launched an assault on the regional administration, which was controlled by representatives of the Maidan Self-Defense and the "Right Sector."[2]. Following these events, the Ukrainian flag was removed, and the flag of the Russian Federation was raised over the administration building.[3] The following day, separatists vacated the building, and the Russian flag was removed.[4]

In the second quarter of 2014, pro-Russian demonstrators suddenly initiated protests in Kharkiv, leading to clashes with local police.[5] Early in the third quarter, the ODA was reclaimed from the separatists.[6]

Shelling in 2022

On March 1, 2022, the building of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration was damaged by a rocket attack attributed to Russian occupiers. Initially, the attack resulted in 24 injuries, including one child, and 7 fatalities.[7] By April 1, 2022, the regional administration reported 29 casualties due to the shelling. Among the victims was volunteer and mathematician Yuliya Zdanovska.[8]
