Khandoya aka Khandowa Family (Urdu/Punjabi: کھنڈویہ المعروف کھنڈوعہ خاندان , also spelled Khandowya, Khandowa) is a Chauhan Rajput sub-clan known as the Khandoya is a landowning tribe living mainly in the northern, central and western parts of the Pakistani Punjab, with significant numbers living in Jhelum, Chakwal and to a lesser extent in Khandowa.[1]

History

According to their traditions, they are a clan of Chauhan Rajputs, who after wondering in from what is now Haryana settled in area near Chakwal in an area that had sweet water, which they called Khandoya or sweet water place. However, another tradition makes Khandoya an Awan, seven Arab generations removed from Qutub Shah, the ancestor of the Awan tribe. But most traditions make Khandoya a Chauhan Rajput.

At the rural level, the Khandoyas were historically the zamindar or landowning class[2] and to this day many Khandoya families live on and cultivate the land, which their ancestors held for centuries. They often carry titles typical to Punjabis[3] who own tracts of ancestral land.
