Joel Rosenblatt is an American musician best known as the longtime drummer for the jazz-fusion band Spyro Gyra.
Rosenblatt grew up in Verona, New Jersey, and started playing the trumpet in third grade, eventually switching to the drums in middle school. After two years at the University of Bridgeport under the direction of renowned music educator Neil Slater, Rosenblatt joined a band in 1980 and started playing the wedding circuit. Rosenblatt later played with Pure Prairie League for two years and Michel Camilo for four years, and enjoyed stints with Steve Khan, Paquito D'Rivera and Eliane Elias. He joined Spyro Gyra in 1991.[1]
The next year, bassist Scott Ambush joined Spyro Gyra and the core quintet of Rosenblatt, Ambush, Jay Beckenstein, Tom Schuman and Julio Fernández would be together until 2004, when Rosenblatt left Spyro Gyra while the band was recording its 27th album, The Deep End.[2]
Since that time, Rosenblatt has played and toured with a number musicians and groups, including Bill Evans, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Chieli Minucci and Special EFX, Ken Navarro, Oz Noy, Chuck Loeb, Mike Manieri, Steve Khan, Randy Brecker, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, Russel Ferrante, Michel Camilo, Bernie Williams, Eliane Elias, Michael Davis, Peter White and the Manhattan Transfer.[3]
