Jason Providakes is president and CEO of the MITRE Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that manages Federally Funded Research and Development Centers for the U.S. Government. He has been recognized with awards for leadership and commitment to fostering innovation in the government technology contracting sector.[1]

Early life

Providakes earned his undergraduate and masters degrees in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.[2] After earning his Ph.D from Cornell University School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1985, Providakes taught at the university and conducted research in radar backscatter, a method used to study the ionosphere.[3]

Career

Providakes began his career at MITRE Corporation in 1991 as a lead scientist, where he continued his research into the ionosphere and used it to help create a radar system that could detect aircraft over the horizon.[4]

He has held leadership positions on major efforts to modernize U.S. government infrastructure and create new capabilities for national security, public health, veteran’s services, and other applications.[2] As a senior vice president for MITRE’s Center for Connected Government, Providakes testified during a 2013 hearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform regarding MITRE’s assessment of issues with the HealthCare.gov website.[5]

In February 2017, Providakes was appointed as MITRE’s President and CEO.[6] Providakes steers cross-cutting work in areas including defense, cybersecurity, healthcare, and other engineering innovation, and guides the company’s stewardship of Federally Funded Research and Development Centers.[7] Under Providakes’ leadership, MITRE has created new organizations including MITRE Labs, which reorganized the company’s research and development operations and talent into a single unit;[8] the Center for Data-Driven Policy, which provides “evidence-based, objective and nonpartisan insights for government policymaking;” [9] and the Center for Strategic Competition, which applies data analysis and simulations to tackle changing worldwide partnerships.[10]

Recognition

Providakes has received a variety of awards and honors for his leadership of MITRE. The [Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce] selected him as its 2022 CEO of the Year for companies with an annual revenue over $300 million.[11]

Consulting Magazine ranked him 31st on its list of Top 50 Consulting Firm CEOs for 2022.[12]

Virginia Business ranked him among its Power 500 list in 2023,[13] 2022,[14] and 2020.[15]

Executive Mosaic honored Providakes for the third time in 2022 with its Wash100 Award, which recognizes the most important contributors in the government contracting field. The publication cited his leadership through the COVID-19 pandemic, overseeing the efforts to address the health crisis, and streamlining the company structure to accelerate innovation including the creation of MITRE Engenuity, a tech foundation for public good.[16]
