The Jamia Masjid Bhaderwah is a mosque located in the town of Bhaderwah, in the Doda district of Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

History

The mosque has a rich history, with its origins dating back 118 years, as of 2019. It is the oldest mosque in the Doda district and has been a focal point for the local Muslim community for over a century.[1]

Flood and reconstruction

Tragically, the original Jamia Masjid, along with the adjacent Islamia School and an orphanage, was destroyed during a devastating flood in 1928. This flood was the result of a massive cloudburst, and it brought significant destruction to the town of Bhaderwah, including the loss of lives, property, and livestock.[1]

Architecture

The Jamia Masjid Bhaderwah consists of a central building with two halls and side rooms, along with four lofty minarets situated at the corners.[1]

Worship

The Jamia Masjid Bhaderwah continues to be a place of worship for the local Muslim population. It attracts gatherings of Muslims,[2] especially on Fridays, for congregational prayers and religious gatherings.[1][3] The mosque the center for mass protests by local Muslims.[4][5]
