Jackson Hinkle (born September 1999) is an American communist political commentator and social media influencer,[2] who hosts the political show The Dive with Jackson Hinkle.[3] He has also appeared on cable news outlets, such as Tucker Carlson Tonight, One America News Network,[4] and Russia's state media, such as RT.[5] As of November 2023, Hinkle is one of the most viral users on the social media site X (formerly Twitter); he has been banned from WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, Paypal, and Twitch for misinformation.[5][6] He has been described by The Jewish Chronicle as Twitter's "most viral misinformation spreader" due to his frequent tweeting.[7][8]

Initially an environmentalist in high school,[9] Hinkle began adopting more radical positions, warning about an alleged globalist threat and taking a pro-fossil fuels stance.[4][6] Hinkle describes himself as an "American Conservative Marxist–Leninist",[6] promoting the "MAGA Communism" ideology. MAGA Communism adherents call on members of the American working class to ally with members of the MAGA movement,[4] and support Vladimir Putin's Russian forces in the Russo-Ukrainian War[4][10] and Hamas in the Israel–Hamas war.[6][7]

Hinkle is known for publishing misinformation and has been embroiled in several controversies, many related to his pro-Palestine and anti-Israel views. After being accused of spreading disinformation about the war in Ukraine, his show on Twitch was removed for violating the platform's misinformation policies.[5][6] Following his deplatforming from Twitch, Hinkle gained significant attention on X, particularly regarding his viral tweets about the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, some of which have been described as anti-Israel disinformation.[5][11] He has claimed images released by Israel of the October 2023 Hamas attack were fake and made controversial statements about the United States' aid to Israel and the potential deployment of the Marines to Gaza, which were later deemed to be misinformation.[12][13][14]

Early life and education

Hinkle was born in 1999 in San Clemente, California.[15][16] He was a member of his middle school surf club, played the guitar, and painted.[17][18] Hinkle attended San Clemente public schools. Attending Shorecliffs Middle School and then San Clemente High School, he graduated high school in 2018.[17][19] Hinkle began to fight against plastic waste at age 17, his understanding of the environmental issue stemming from his time surfing.[9] In March 2016, while still in high school, Hinkle founded the Team Zissou Environmental Organization (the name came from Steve Zissou, the protagonist of the Wes Anderson film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou), an environmental association that does lobbying and volunteer work, such as beach cleanups in Orange County.[18] Under Hinkle's guidance, the club gathered hundreds of students to work collaboratively towards improving the environment.[20]

In 2017, Hinkle became Water Ambassador for The Water Effect at The Ecology Center.[21] Hinkle was also named one of "The 17 Most Inspirational Kids of 2017" by Reader's Digest,[22] and was featured in Teen Vogue as one of eight young environmentalists "working to save the earth" in 2017.[6] In 2018, Hinkle went to Washington, D.C. as a representative of nuclear safety advocacy group San Clemente Green. He spoke at a congressional briefing on the subject of safely dealing with decommissioned nuclear plants, and met with congressional members.[18][23] This was covered by the Los Angeles Times, with Gary Headrick, the San Clemente Green founder, telling the paper about Hinkle: "He's the kind of guy who gives you hope about the future. It's hard to find young people who take these things seriously, but Jackson is fearless and well-informed."[6] That same year, Hinkle attended Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, to pursue political science.[24][25]

Political and activist career

Hinkle began his political activism in the late 2010s, running in a San Clemente city council special election in 2019, a year after graduating from high school.[26][27] During this campaign, he advocated that the city of San Clemente have its own police department, he "categorically and unconditionally" opposed the legalization of prostitution, and proposed combatting the presence and effect of nuclear waste in the area.[27] Hinkle ultimately lost the election, winning a little less than a third of the vote.[28] In 2020, Hinkle launched the political show The Dive with Jackson Hinkle on YouTube, which reached 300,000 subscribers by 2023,[29] and on Twitch as JacksonHinkleTV,[30] later expanding to Rumble, when he was banned for "harmful misinformation" related to the war in Ukraine.[5][8]

In January 2022, Hinkle debated progressive political commentator Sam Seder on his talk show The Majority Report with Sam Seder.[31] In the debate, Hinkle attacked Seder's support for the Squad and argued that they had backed the American government's imperialist foreign policy by funding the State Department, which he said "is leading coups across this world and is launching hybrid warfare through the National Endowment for Democracy."[32] He also attacked the Squad for accepting money from billionaire investor George Soros, which Seder countered by asking if Hinkle believed the Squad "sold out for over $2,700 from George Soros?"[32] Seder challenged the idea that the Squad is given preferential treatment in the media and said their funding for the State Department is of limited importance, saying "I don't care" repeatedly in reference to Hinkle's argument about the Squad being a part of the establishment.[32]

On September 6, 2022, Hinkle went on Tucker Carlson Tonight, denouncing United States president Joe Biden as "beholden to the military-industrial complex" and "extremely out of line with what average Americans need right now."[3] He attacked the Biden administration, saying that it was ignoring the needs of American working class communities, arguing that they "don't have clean drinking water in Jackson, Mississippi, yet we're sending $7 billion over to Ukraine", and referred to Biden's efforts to militarily aid Ukraine as "funding this insanity in Ukraine".[3] He also stated that Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a dictator who was building a "fascist, dystopian state" in Ukraine.[33] In October 2022, Hinkle and Haz Al-Din, a fellow Twitch streamer and the author of The Rise of MAGA Communism, went to Twitchcon, where they filmed themselves mocking the use of COVID-19 face masks, support for Ukraine, and calls for online content moderation. A few days later, the two appeared on a stream with Jon Zherka, a "Dark MAGA" streamer, where the three attempted to engage with UCLA students on campus.[4]

In April 2023, Hinkle dubbed the firing of conservative-populist pundit Tucker Carlson from Fox News as the "end of an era".[34] In June 2023, Hinkle spoke at the Rage Against the War Machine anti-war rally in Washington, D.C., which included speakers from the Libertarian Party, the People's Party, and the far-right conspiratorial LaRouche movement, among others,[35] opposing United States support for Ukraine.[36][37] On July 26, 2023, Hinkle debated television personality Piers Morgan on the subject of the Russo-Ukrainian War on his program Piers Morgan Uncensored, with Hinkle arguing that Ukraine and Zelenskyy hold a neo-Nazi ideology, while Morgan held that this was a "bonkers" notion given Zelensky's Jewish heritage.[38][39]

In 2023, Hinkle began appearing on RT. He was interviewed on September 20, and denounced the West's foreign policy, stating that they amount to a "hollow skeleton of power".[40] Hinkle added that he believed Zelenskyy would suffer the same fate as Osama bin Laden.[41] Hinkle also visited Russia and expressed a positive view of his trip there, stating that the "patriotic will of the Russians is similar to the sentiment of people from the American heartland".[42] On October 27, Hinkle appeared on Vladimir Solovyov's program to denounce Israeli policy in regards to the Gaza Strip; Hinkle had previously interviewed Solovyov in February 2023.[43][44]

In November 2023, Hinkle received the International Journalism Award from the Club de Periodistas de Mexico for his coverage of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war.[45][46]

Views

Outline of views

Hinkle has been variously described as "one of the youngest Progressives on the political media landscape",[47] a communist commentator,[48] a conservative commentator,[36] a conservative influencer,[49] a pro-Russia MAGA influencer,[50] a right-wing influencer,[11] a far-right social media influencer,[5] and a far-right YouTuber.[51] Hinkle describes himself as an "American Conservative Marxist–Leninist",[6] a "Marxist–Leninist anti-imperialist American patriot",[3] and a "MAGA Communist".[37][52] Hinkle has also been described as a pro-Russia operative[53][54] and is often grouped as part of the anti-Israel far-right.[55]

Hinkle refers to himself as an American patriot, who opposes the White House's "imperialist foreign policy."[32] Since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, he has been described as vocally pro-Russia and anti-Ukraine. He tweeted that Zelenskyy is "responsible for every death in the Ukraine war" and shared posts on Instagram that praised Putin.[53] He has urged the Republican Party to reject Zionism and called for MAGA-aligned Republican representative Jim Jordan to focus on American domestic issues rather than backing additional aid to Ukraine and Israel.[56]

In late 2022, Hinkle advocated for the concept of MAGA Communism, leading it to trend on Twitter. Vice described it as a "swirl of social conservatism, patriotism and subversive energy", and described Hinkle as coming from "the far-right entertainment playbook by agitating on livestreams".[4] On September 19, 2022, Hinkle was interviewed by One America News Network host Addison Smith. Echoing George Soros conspiracy theories, Hinkle said: "Communism and Marxism historically have been conservative. It's a new era in the West that made it adhere to liberal-leftist values. This is not true Marxism. It's Marxism funded by George Soros. They don't want communists, left-wing populists, right-wing populists, uniting on common issues to fight the deep state."[4] Smith questioned if Hinkle actually supported communism; in response he stated that the United States "can learn from the Soviet Union and Communist China", that "Marxism–Leninism has historically been conservative", and that what he described as communism's "liberal-leftist values" are a perversion "funded by George Soros".[4]

MAGA Communism

Hinkle describes himself as a proponent of MAGA Communism, a political slogan that gained attention in early September 2022. Hinkle and other supporters of MAGA Communism argue that those who care about the working class should ally with the MAGA movement, which they consider to be the largest anti-establishment populist movement in the United States, to incite a populist revolution. They believe that MAGA Communism can serve as a force for American prosperity, working class unity, and they emphasize patriotic strength and the benefit of the common good. MAGA Communists criticize liberal identity politics, reject American imperialism, and dismiss climate change efforts as virtue-signaling "green fascism".[4] MAGA Communists sharply criticize non-communist elements of the conservative movement, with Hinkle criticizing the likes of conservative pundits Ben Shapiro and Laura Loomer for supporting Israel.[50][56]

Observers, liberal commentators, and left-wing critics describe MAGA Communism as an alt-right spin to combine aspects of what Vice characterized as "authoritarian MAGA" with "tankie communism", eschewing progressive values, and co-opting socialism, referencing a far-right strategy described in Blackshirts and Reds by political scientist Michael Parenti.[4] One example of liberal criticism is that of Ana Kasparian, who said: "We should be careful, because when you think of Nazis and fascists and how they brought people over to their sides. They co-opted socialist rhetoric to bring people in, and then their 'populist' movement was what? Extermination."[4] Sam Seder, a left-wing critic of Hinkle, commented of an interview Hinkle gave about MAGA Communism, saying: "This is such a word salad that I can't follow what the hell he's talking about."[4] Daniel HoSang, a professor at Yale University and an expert on modern American right-wing movements, told Motherboard: "But what's interesting about the 'MAGA Communism' phrase is that it doesn't necessarily mean communism in the literal sense of, say, demanding collective ownership. I think it's meant to be a kind of cultural invocation—a defense from that which the elites want you to believe. It suggests something about how people's political moorings are unsettled, and the search to find new bearings."[4]

Reception

MAGA Communism has been described as lacking ideological consistency and focusing its appeal to people disillusioned with modern American liberalism. Brian Hughes, the associate director of the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab at American University, said: "Various figures are trying to take advantage of the moment. Skull-mask [neo-fascist] networks, and accelerationist networks more broadly, have been juicing MAGA Communism because they like to inhabit odd, esoteric subcultures. They're smaller, and easier to exploit. It helps that MAGA Communism has little ideological consistency, and can vibe with people who want to be edgy, on the political fringe."[4]

Emanuele Ottolenghi and Marina Rosenberg, respectively the Senior Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and Senior Vice President for International Affairs at the Anti-Defamation League, wrote that Hinkle is a "known conspiracy theorist, and a staunch admirer of Russia's Vladimir Putin and Syria's Bashar al-Assad; he has denied China's brutal repression of its Uyghur minority as well as the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons against its own people."[10] Russian-American journalist Cathy Young described Hinkle as a "ragebait-monetizing 'MAGA communist' troll".[52]

Hinkle's movement has been placed within the context of an American conservatism that, in the words of Democratic Party strategist David Shor, was getting "really very weird", with The New Republic describing it as a movement that "combined American nationalism with praise for another authoritarian leader despised by most Americans, China's Xi Jinping."[57] Thomas Fazi of Compact highlights the ambiguity surrounding the objectives of MAGA Communism, and outlines two potential interpretations. Fazi suggests that one perspective, attributed to Hinkle, proposes uniting the far-left and far-right factions beneath an "anti-elite umbrella". Alternatively, Fazi cites another viewpoint attributed to Haz Al-Din, which advocates transcending conventional ideologies and the traditional left–right political spectrum to establish a novel populist working class–elites dynamic.[58]

Controversies and alleged misinformation

Hinkle has a history of publishing misinformation,[7][51] with The Dive with Jackson Hinkle show being a source of controversy.[59][60][61] In April 2022, the Tech Transparency Project stated that the show was peddling "Putin propaganda" in violation of the site rules of Twitch, where the show was hosted on.[30] The show was later found to have violated the three new policies outlined by Twitch, namely "(1) persistently sharing (2) widely disproven and broadly shared (3) harmful misinformation topics, such as conspiracies that promote violence."[30] As a result, the show was taken off Twitch for spreading "misinformation about the war in Ukraine".[5][6][61]

Since being deplatformed from Twitch, Hinkle has attracted attention for his tweets regarding the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, gaining 1.4 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) by October 2023 and later being deemed the platform's most viral user.[55] His tweets about the conflict have led to him being labeled as one of the "most viral misinformation spreaders" in regards to the conflict by The Jewish Chronicle.[6] Described as an "online reactionary" and "paid clout-chaser" for leveraging pro-Palestine views, he once proclaimed: "I do everything for the clout, you will never see me do something not for the clout."[7]

Hinkle's tweeting style has been criticized, with some commentators regarding his tweets as misinformation and purposely misleading. His posts have been cited and referenced repeatedly by Iranian state-affiliated media,[7][10][62] and by the Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad affiliated Quds News Network.[45] In the wake of the 2023 Israel–Hamas conflict, Hinkle was deplatformed from YouTube,[10] with Hinkle dubbing himself the "most censored man on YouTube"[53] as well as the internet's "most viral worldwide".[7] With posts reaching over 20 million views,[12] in November 2023, Hinkle reached 2 million followers on X,[5][13] where he offers a premium subscription to those wanting to help him "DEFEAT THE ZIONIST LIES".[6] Previously in August 2023, Bloomberg reported that Hinkle had requested antisemitic, AI-generated images from a tool called Midjourney,[8] which a study found easily generates racist and conspiratorial images.[63]

A graphic image from the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel was shared on X by Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as the conservative commentator Ben Shapiro. Hinkle subsequently claimed that the image was fake due to an inaccurate AI detector classification; however, the image was determined to be genuine by other AI detectors, and later verified by third-party sources as authentic.[12][64] Hinkle also falsely claimed on X that Haaretz had reported that the Israeli government inflated the death toll for the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.[13][nb 1] Haaretz quoted the post in a tweet and said that Hinkle's post "contain[ed] blatant lies" and was not substantiated by their reporting on the attack.[65][66]

In October 2023, Hinkle shared a fake news release stating that the United States was sending billions of dollars in aid to Israel.[2] He additionally published fake news on the arrival of the United States Marines in Israel, using an image from July 2022 in Romania that was unrelated to Israel.[14] Hinkle tweeted false claims about Iran and Yemen declaring war on Israel.[5][67][68] Before deleting his post, Hinkle also claimed that video footage showed Israel bombing hospitals; however, the footage instead showed an infirmary in Aleppo dated to 2016.[69] Hinkle encouraged X users to repost a video from 2018 of a three-year old being detained by border police in Hebron, in the southern West Bank, which received over one million views with many users believing the video to be from the 2023 conflict.[61] On November 12, 2023, Hinkle posted on X: "You CANNOT BREAK the Palestinian spirit", accompanied by a photo which showed a woman stepping down the stairs of a demolished building.[49] Agence France-Presse's fact checking discovered that the captioned photo was not from Palestine but from Syria, and had been submitted in 2020 for the Siena International Photo Awards.[49]

Personal life

Hinkle is an Eastern Orthodox Christian. Since 2023, Hinkle has been in a relationship with Russian model Anna Linnikova, who won the Miss Russia competition in 2022.[53]
