Sand mafia

In 2023, there were reports of a widespread illegal sand mining operation. This illicit sand trade, with a value in the millions of rupees, is under the control of a local leader who is affiliated with the ruling political party. Despite the harm to the environment caused by extracting sand without the necessary permits, local residents are expressing their disapproval of these actions. The unrestrained removal of sand from the seafloor has raised concerns regarding its impact on marine life and the potential for natural disasters such as tsunamis. Engaging in sand extraction without proper permits presents a significant environmental hazard. Local leaders and authorities assert that they lack the authority to grant permission for dredging and sand extraction. They stress that such activities require approval from higher-ranking authorities and must adhere to established regulations [Eenadu 1]
