In Stars and Time is a 2023 role-playing video game developed by insertdisc5 and published by Armor Games Studios. Players control a party of adventurers stuck in a time loop.

Gameplay

A group of experienced adventurers assault a usurper, King, in his castle. King casts a powerful spell that traps the country in a time loop. During the battle, the party's rogue, Siffrin, dies. The next morning, the time loop resets, and Siffrin wakes in the village they stopped in before assaulting the castle. Players control Siffrin as he attempts to lead the party through the castle and defeat King. Players can make use of the time loop to learn how to solve problems, for example repeating conversations until they choose the correct dialogue option. Combat uses Active-Time Battle, a form a turn-based combat. Players can use combos by using the same form of attack in combat. These special attacks can heal party members and deal damage to all enemies. The graphics are black-and-white and presented in the style of Game Boy games.[1]

Development

Armor Games Studios released In Stars and Time on November 20, 2023.[2]

Reception

In Stars and Time received positive reviews on Metacritic.[3] RPGFan praised the characters, story, combat, and gameplay, though they said the time loops can make it repetitive and linear.[1] TechRadar called it "unmissable" and praised the worldbuilding, characters, and story. They said the loops do not feel too repetitive, but they found some of the required backtracking tedious.[4] Describing it as beautiful and strange, Nintendo Life found In Stars and Time difficult but recommended it to fans of Undertale and EarthBound.[5] Though they praised the characters and uniqueness of In Stars and TIme's gameplay, Nintendo World Report criticized the game mechanics for having what they felt was an odd progression system, too much repetition, and lengthy dialogue that popped up at unnecessary points.[6]
