Dầu Tiếng Reservoir, also known as Dầu Tiếng Lake (Vietnamese: Hồ Dầu Tiếng), is a reservoir located on the border of the provinces of Tây Ninh, Bình Dương and Bình Phước in Southeast Vietnam.[1] The lake was formed by damming the Saigon River just north of the Dầu Tiếng town. It is part of a major project to irrigate the agricultural lands of Tây Ninh province and the neighboring provinces of Bình Dương, Ho Chi Minh City and Long An.[2][3]
Details
The reservoir has a water surface area of 270 square kilometres (100 sq mi) and a total storage capacity of 1.58 billion cubic metres (56×10 9 cu ft).[1][4] It consists of a main dam stretching 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) across the Saigon River and a 29-km embankment.[5] The three main irrigation canals, namely East Canal, West Canal, and Tân Hưng Canal, convey water from the reservoir to the smaller local canals in regions of the catchment.[6]
History
The Dầu Tiếng Irrigation Project was approved by the Prime Minister of Vietnam in 1979. Earlier, on 24 August 1978, the IDA Credit 845-VN of US$60 million for the project was signed, which became effective on 22 February 1979, making it the first project to be financed by the World Bank after the reunification of Vietnam in 1976.[7][8] The Kuwait Fund, OPEC and Government of the Netherlands co-financed the project, with a funding of US$10 million equivalent from each. In April 1984, the Kuwait Fund provided a supplemental credit of KD6.0 million (approximately US$20.4 million), which resulted in a total cost of US$110 million.[9]

Construction began on 29 April 1981. In 1984, the reservoir began to hold water and then on 10 January 1985, the project was completed with water flowing into the East and West canals.[5] Until the project's completion in 1985, the population of Tây Ninh had contributed 15 million workdays, according to the Communist Youth Union.[10]
The Tân Hưng Canal was added during 1996–1999 to irrigate regions of the Tân Châu and Tân Biên districts.[11] In 2011, the Phước Hòa Dam across the Bé River was opened to divert water from Bé River to Dầu Tiếng Reservoir.[12]
