Chenabi (also Pahari Kashmiri or Chenabich Kashir[3]) is a dialect spoken in the Chenab region of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.[4]
Etymology
"Chenabi" holds its literal meaning as "of the Chenab," emphasizing a connection to the Chenab region. The term was coined by Anzer Ayoob, a journalist and author whose work is known for promoting lesser known languages.[1] In the linguistic nuances, the Kashmir valley articulates Kashmiri as "Koshur," while the Chenab region opts for the pronunciation "Kashir."[5] "Pahari Kashmiri" translates to "the Kashmiri language spoken in hilly areas," highlighting its usage in elevated terrains.[4]
Overview
The term "Chenabi" is used to describe the Kashmiri language spoken in the Chenab region, distinguishing it from other variants in the broader Kashmiri linguistic landscape.[5] Despite linguistic variations within the region, some activists have used the term "Pahari Kashmiri" to identify this specific dialect due to its association with the hilly terrain of the Chenab region.[6][7] According to linguistic activist Sadaket Malik, the Kashmiri language is officially recognized to have three dialects. Malik advocates for the acknowledgment of Pahari Kashmiri as a dialect, emphasizing its ethnic Kashmiri roots.[4]
Multilingual News Initiative
In January 2021, Anzer Ayoob initiated the Multilingual News Initiative (MNI) under the banner of The Chenab Times.[7] This volunteer-driven project aims to broadcast news in lesser-known languages, including "Chenabich Kashir" dialect.[6][4]
