This land of c. 111 acres is almost entirely covered in scrub. Scrub removal is prohibited under various European and National directives. European Union payments are not paid on scrublands.
Water supply is dependant on rain catchment.
The land is subject to the following designations:
• S.A.C. Special area of conservation
• S.P.A. Special protection area
• N.H.A. National heritage area
• There is a large Caprine herd registered with Department of Agriculture, still in existence
• Current contract with Department of Agriculture for protection of geese and swans
• Ongoing longitudinal study on bird population by joint Universities
• Subject to farm biosecurity protocols

Canon Island (Irish: Oileán na gCanánach)[1] is an island and townland situated in the Shannon Estuary, in County Clare, Ireland. It is about 2.5 km (1.6 mi) east of the village of Kildysart and about 1.5 km (0.9 mi) from the shore on the mainland.
The island is home to the ruins of Canon Island Abbey, an Augustinian monastery built in the late 12th century.[2]
