CDV agar is a nutrient medium prepared using Cicer arietinum (Bengal gram), Daucus carota (carrot) and Vigna radiata (green gram). This agar which is known to be useful for the routine culture of Escherichia coli was developed in India as a replacement for other commonly used nutrient media containing animal products. Animal products such as peptone, beef extract, and yeast extract used in groth medium are culturally objectionable, especially in India.
The components of this nutrient medium are plant based materials chosen for their nutritional content. In this growth medium chick pea replaces peptone, green gram replaces beef extract, and carrot replaces yeast extract. Together these plant sources provide sufficient proteins and carbohydrates, along with other essential biochemicals.
