Burundi–Iran relations

Burundi

Iran

Burundi and Iran established diplomatic relations on 31 March 1985.[1] Iran has a non resident ambassador in Kampala.

History

In 2018, Iran voted against creating a commission of inquiry on Burundi at the United Nations.[2] Every year since 2015 when Pierre Nkurunziza was in power, Burundi voted against condemning Iran at the United Nations.[3][4][5][6][7][8]

Burundi would again vote against condemning Iran in 2023.[9]

In 2022, the Ambassador of Burundi stated "The Republic of Burundi is interested in raising its relations with Iran to the highest possible level and making a redoubled effort to make up for the shortcomings caused by the coronavirus pandemic in the past two years."[10]

State visits

In 2015, President Pierre Nkurunziza met Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and said "The Islamic Republic of Iran is a precious friend for us, and Bujumbura wishes to expand comprehensive relations with Tehran."[11]

In 2016, the Burundian Minister of Foreign Affairs visited Tehran to meet President Hassan Rouhani, following Burundi's isolation by the west.[12]
