Astroblepus chapmani is a species of catfish of the family Astroblepidae. It can be found in the Magdalena River in Colombia.[2][3]

Although the patronym was not identified; Eigenmann mentioned a “Dr. F. M. Chapman” in a later (1942) publication, who was a traveling companion in South America; this may have been ornithologist Frank M. Chapman (1864-1945), American Museum of Natural History.[4]Chapman's catfish is a small to medium-sized fish, typically reaching a maximum length of about 12 centimeters (4.7 inches). It has a cylindrical body shape with a flattened head and a small, downturned mouth. The body coloration can vary but is typically brown or gray with darker mottling or spots. It has a series of bony plates along its body that provide protection. As a bottom-dwelling species, Chapman's catfish is adapted to life in fast-flowing rivers with rocky substrates. It is primarily a nocturnal feeder, using its sensitive barbels to locate small invertebrates and organic matter on the riverbed. Due to its specific habitat requirements, it is considered a specialized and endemic species. Chapman's catfish is not commonly kept in aquariums, and there is limited information available about its specific care requirements in captivity. In its natural habitat, it plays an important role in the aquatic ecosystem by contributing to nutrient recycling and as a food source for larger predatory fish. Conservation status information for Astroblepus chapmani is limited, and it may be affected by habitat degradation, pollution, and other threats that impact freshwater ecosystems in the region. Further research and conservation efforts are needed to understand and protect this species and its habitat.
