Ashar (Persian: اشار, also Romanized as Āshār; also known as Ashor and Ashur)[3] is a city in, and the capital of Ashar District of Mehrestan County, Sistan and Baluchestan province, Iran.[4]

At the 2006 census, its population was 2,676 in 529 households, when it was a village in Ashar Rural District of Sarbaz County.[5] The following census in 2011 counted 3,817 people in 831 households,[6] by which time the district had been separated from the county to become a part of the newly established Zaboli County[7] (renamed Mehrestan County).[8] The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 3,786 people in 927 households.[2]

After the census, the village of Ashar was elevated to the status of a city.[4]
