Amber Atherton (born 9 February 1991) is a British entrepreneur and investor who is a partner at the early stage venture capital firm Patron. Previously, she was the Head of Strategic Communities at Discord. Atherton joined Discord through the acqui-hire[1] of her community software startup Zyper in January 2021.[2][3] She is known for co-creating and appearing in the reality television series Made in Chelsea. She also founded the e-commerce company My Flash Trash[4][5][6] and visual recognition app Rubric.[7][8]

In 2017, Atherton released a new app created by Zyper. The app, Rubric, helps Instagram and Facebook users with captions for photos they want to post. Based on a visual recognition system and embed machine learning, the app suggests a witty caption, inspirational quote, or song lyrics related to what a user is about to upload.[9]

Early life and career

Atherton was born and brought up in Hong Kong,[10] and educated at boarding school in England.[6] She began modelling as a teenager, appearing in Love magazine, i-D magazine and Tatler. As a child, Atherton coded, and set up various businesses[11] before founding cult e-commerce company My Flash Trash when she was 17. She sold My Flash Trash in 2016 for an estimated £2 million.[12][13][14]

Atherton gained celebrity as a creator of the popular UK reality television show Made in Chelsea.[15][16] She has since focused on enterprise,[17] appearing as a Business Buddy on the BBC's Young Dragon's Den show, Pocket Money Pitch and judging the UK's national enterprise challenge.[18] Atherton was listed as the "5th-Most Powerful Person in Digital Fashion" by British Vogue in 2011.[19]

Atherton was featured in Forbes 30 Under 30, Europe: Retail & E-Commerce in 2016.[20]
